BOPET: Imbalance Between Supply and Demand may Exacerbate
In 2020, the BOPET market was affected by the epidemic and the commissioning of newly added units was postponed, but the demand related to epidemic prevention and export grew, and the short-term mismatch between supply and demand led to a continuous rise in market prices and a considerable increase in profitability of producers. In 2021, the newly added units were put into use successively, and the demand related to epidemic prevention gradually returned to the normal level, presenting an obvious imbalance between supply and demand.
According to the incomplete statistics of SCI, in 2021, a total of 32 production lines with a design capacity of 1,120kt/a are expected to be put into use. If all the above production lines are put into operation, the total BOPET capacity will reach 4,607kt/a in 2021, an increase of 32.12% compared with the end of 2020. As of May 19, 2021, 6 production lines have been put into operation, with a design capacity of 215kt/a, accounting for 19.20% of the total capacity planned to be put into operation. 26 production lines have not yet been put into operation, with a design capacity of 905kt/a, accounting for 80.80% of the total capacity planned to be put into operation.
