China Butadiene Supply to Dip in Sep
By the end of August, there were 44 butadiene producers included in the normal load calculation in China, with a total capacity of 6,546kt/a. The sample capacity was divided by region as follows.

In August, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was around 63.86%, up 5.89% from last month. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 390.6kt in August. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia remained offline. Shanghai Secco Petrochemical, PetroChina Daqing Petrochemical, PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical and Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company restarted their butadiene units. Liaoning Bora Petrochemical shut down its butadiene unit in early August. The butadiene units at Shandong Wintter Chemical and Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase III were shut down in late August. The operating rate of other butadiene units saw minor changes.
Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry heated up M-O-M. Butadiene units with a total capacity of 725kt/a were shut in August, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 31.94kt.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers remained stable with 69% share of the total in August, down 1% Y-O-Y. As for production technologies, butadiene units via butene ODH technology remained offline. As seen from the butadiene units via C4 extraction technology, the operating rates of butadiene units at PetroChina Daqing Petrochemical, PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals Phase I, Sinopec Zhongke (Guangdong) Refinery, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical, Gulei Petrochemical, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase I, Wanhua Chemical Group and Shandong Shouguang Luqing Petrochemical ramped up M-O-M. However, Shandong Wintter Chemical, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase III and Liaoning Bora Petrochemical curtailed the operating rate of their butadiene units M-O-M. On the whole, in August, the butadiene supply in China advanced from last month.
In September, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia will remain offline. Shandong Wintter Chemical, Liaoning Bora Petrochemical and Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase III plan to restart their butadiene units. Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical and PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical plan to take maintenance of their butadiene units. What’s more, the butadiene units at BASF-YPC and Sanjiang Chemical have been shut down unexpectedly. Other butadiene units may run normally. On the whole, it is envisaged that the butadiene supply will dwindle in September.
