Maersk Plans to Expand Methanol-Powered Fleet
Maersk is planning to order 10-15 dual-fuel methanol-powered feeder container vessels of around 3500TEU, and has approached a number of Chinese shipyards, including Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard and Taizhou Sanfu Shipbuilding.
According to Clarkson, Maersk operates a container fleet of 246 vessels with 22.288 million deadweight tons and 1.975 million TEU, including the first methanol-powered feeder container vessel “Laura Maersk” in operation. Maersk also has undelivered container vessel orders of 24 vessels with 3.594 million deadweight tons and 348,000 TEU, all of which are methanol dual-fuel vessels.
In addition to Chinese shipyards, South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard is also said to be likely to receive Maersk’s orders. In June 2023, Maersk ordered six 9000TEU methanol dual-fuel medium container vessels with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. If Maersk chooses to place an order at a Chinese shipyard this time, it will be its second methanol-powered container vessel order in China.
