Shanxi Boosts Unconventional Gas Output In Push For 30 Bcm By 2030
Shanxi province, China’s top coalbed methane producer, is ramping up unconventional natural gas supply as the country seeks to bolster energy security and cut emissions.
Output of unconventional gas, primarily coalbed methane, in the northern province reached 13.61 bcm in the first nine months of the year, up 6.7% from a year earlier, a record high for the period, according to provincial statistics data.
Shanxi holds proven geological reserves of about 970 bcm of coalbed methane, the largest in the country. It has built two major production bases in the Qinshui Basin and the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin, comprising six large-scale gas fields with annual capacity of over 1 bcm each.
Production costs for coalbed methane in the region are estimated at approximately $5.5-6/MMBtu, people familiar with the matter said.
The province aims to rapidly increase reserves and production, targeting annual output of 30 bcm by 2030, as part of its plan to build a billion-dollar unconventional gas industrial cluster.
