Mar China Butadiene Operating Rate to See Minor Changes
By the end of February, there are 38 butadiene producers in China, with the total capacity of 5,576kt/a. The sample covers the capacity of 930kt/a, 405kt/a, 2,692kt/a, 790kt/a, 150kt/a, 369kt/a and 240kt/a, respectively in 7 producers in Northeast China, 3 producers in North China, 17 producers in East China, 5 producers in South China, 1 producer in Southwest China, 3 producers in Northwest China and 2 producers in Central China.
In February, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was around 77.01%, up 1.99% from last month. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 347.5kt in February, up 2.6% M-O-M and 10.1% Y-O-Y. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Shandong Kenli Petrochemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia and Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology continued to remain shut. Shandong Wintter Chemical shut down its butadiene unit at the end of January, and the restart time was still uncertain. The butadiene units at Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical and Sinopec Zhongke (Guangdong) Refinery ran normally. North Huajin Chemical Industries shut down its butadiene unit for maintenance from February 10, and the unit resumed normal production from February 19. Shanghai Secco Petrochemical shut down its 90kt/a butadiene unit for maintenance this month. The 160kt/a butadiene unit at Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Phase II ran normally, so its operating rate was counted into the overall operating rate from this month. Other butadiene units saw slight adjustments. Thus, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry inched up from last month.
Remarks: The 160kt/a butadiene unit at Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical runs normally at present, so the total capacity of China’s butadiene industry reaches 5,576kt/a from February 2022.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in February, accounting for around 88% of the total and up 3% M-O-M. As for production technologies, the operating rate of butadiene units via butene ODH technology didn’t change notably. As seen from the butadiene units via C4 extraction technology, the operating rates at Shanghai Secco Petrochemical, North Huajin Chemical Industries and Shandong Wintter Chemical were relatively low. The operating rates at Sinopec Zhongke (Guangdong) Refinery, Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical and Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Phase II were ramping up. Overall, in February, China’s butadiene supply inched up from last month.
In March 2022, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Shandong Kenli Petrochemical, Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Shanghai Secco Petrochemical will continue to remain shut. PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical plans to shut its 150kt/a butadiene unit for around one-week maintenance from mid-March. Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical plans to take maintenance of its 120kt/a butadiene unit from late March. Shandong Wintter Chemical and Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology plan to restart the butadiene units. Other butadiene units will run normally. Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry will change slightly in March.
