China EPS Capacity to Rise in 2022

Despite the overcapacity in China’s EPS industry, China’s EPS capacity continues to rise. In 2020, China’s total EPS capacity reached 6,180kt/a, up 360kt/a or 6.19%from 2019. The newly added capacity was mainly from Zhuhai Rengeng, Xinjiang Xingda, Tianjin Jiatai, Shenyang Zhengxing and Yanchuan Rengeng. In 2021, China’s newly added EPS capacity was mainly from the Anhui Jiaxi (200kt/a) and Dalian Sunchem Phase II (120kt/a). In 2022, the newly added capacity is from Qingdao Rengeng, Anqing Xingda, Ningbo Longli Grand New Material (Phase II). Meanwhile, Jiangsu Haoguan plans to put its unit into production soon.

Most of China’s EPS is still in East China due to the convenient transportation, intensive demand and Zhangjiagang port (the main port for styrene imports and exports). However, with newly added capacity put into production in South China, Northeast China and Shandong, the supply increased and the competition intensified.
