Jun China Butadiene Operating Rate to Keep Flat
By the end of May, there are 38 butadiene producers in China, with the total capacity of 5,576kt/a. The sample covers the capacity of 930kt/a, 405kt/a, 2,692kt/a, 790kt/a, 150kt/a, 369kt/a and 240kt/a, respectively in 7 producers in Northeast China, 3 producers in North China, 17 producers in East China, 5 producers in South China, 1 producer in Southwest China, 3 producers in Northwest China and 2 producers in Central China.
In May, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was around 72.97%, up 3.5% from last month. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 339kt in May. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical (one set) continued to remain shut. In May, Shandong Wintter Chemical shut down its 60kt/a butadiene unit on May 11. Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology shut down its 100kt/a butadiene unit on May 18. BASF-YPC shut down its 130kt/a butadiene unit on May 19. A 60kt/a butadiene unit at Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical was restarted on May 19. Other butadiene units didn’t see obvious changes.
560kt/a butadiene units were shut in May, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 35,200mt.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in May, accounting for around 81% of the total and down 7% M-O-M. As for production technologies, the operating rate of butadiene units via butene ODH technology ramped down. The butadiene unit at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia maintained normal operation. Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology shut down its butadiene unit in mid-May. As seen from the butadiene units via C4 extraction technology, the operating rate at PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical and Sinopec Maoming Company warmed up. The operating rate at Shandong Wintter Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and BASF-YPC leveled down. Overall, the supply of Chinese-made butadiene inched up M-O-M.
In June, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology will continue to remain shut. In early June, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical may take turnarounds of its 90kt/a butadiene unit. BASF-YPC plans to restart its 130kt/a butadiene unit in mid-June. Shandong Wintter Chemical plans to restart its 60kt/a butadiene unit as well. Other butadiene units will run normally. Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical is expected to put its 70kt/a butadiene unit into operation in early June. Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry will see minor changes in June.
