May China Butadiene Operating Rate to Edge Up
By the end of April, there are 38 butadiene producers in China, with the total capacity of 5,576kt/a. The sample covers the capacity of 930kt/a, 405kt/a, 2,692kt/a, 790kt/a, 150kt/a, 369kt/a and 240kt/a, respectively in 7 producers in Northeast China, 3 producers in North China, 17 producers in East China, 5 producers in South China, 1 producer in Southwest China, 3 producers in Northwest China and 2 producers in Central China.
In April, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was around 69.47%, down 1.97% from last month. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 322.8kt in April. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical continued to remain shut. This month, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia restarted their butadiene units. As for Sinopec Maoming Company, its 100kt/a butadiene unit was shut on March 30 and restarted on April 16, and its 50kt/a butadiene unit took maintenance for around 50 days from April 16. Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical took turnarounds of its 200kt/a butadiene unit from April 3 and restarted the unit on April 10. PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical shut down its unit for maintenance from April 10 and restarted it on April 27. Other butadiene units didn’t see obvious changes.
845kt/a butadiene units were shut in April, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 33,420mt.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in April, accounting for around 88% of the total and up 10% M-O-M. As for production technologies, the operating rate of butadiene units via butene ODH technology ramped up notably. The butadiene units at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia maintained normal operation. As seen from the butadiene units via C4 extraction technology, PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical and Sinopec Maoming Company cut their operating rates. The operating rates at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia and Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology ramped up. Overall, the supply of Chinese-made butadiene inched down M-O-M.
In May, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical and Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical will continue to remain shut. In early May, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical will restart its 90kt/a butadiene unit. Liaoning Bora Petrochemical may shut down its 120kt/a butadiene unit for around 11 days. BASF-YPC plans to take maintenance of its 130kt/a butadiene unit for around 50 days in mid-May. Other butadiene units will run normally. Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry will see an uptick in May.
