China’s low-sulphur petroleum coke price soared by over 100% this month. The graphite electrode stimulated the 1#A price to rise from RMB 1,800/mt to RMB 3,900/mt in July, the greatest increment from 2008, and other grades followed this surge. The extremely low inventory level and the low overall operating rate caused by turnarounds also supported the surge firmly. However, considering the mild demand in the whole picture, the momentum of the further rise will be limited, and the tight supply will be alleviated when refineries resume operation in succession.
