Butadiene Supply Picked Up in Dec

Up to now, there are 28 butadiene producers in China, with a total capacity of 3,889kt/a. The investigated ones include the total capacity of 650kt/a, 335kt/a, 1,715t/a, 530kt/a, 120kt/a, 369kt/a and 170kt/a, respectively in 5 producers of Northeast China, 2 producers of North China, 11 producers of East China, 3 producers of South China, 1 producer of Southwest China, 3 producers of Northwest China and 2 producers of Central China.

In December, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry ramped up to 71% roughly. According to SCI, the monthly output fell to around 230kt in December, based on the following aspects. The butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical continued to be shut in December. The butadiene units at Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical and Fujian Refining & Petrochemical ran normally in mid-late December. The phase II unit at CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals ran normally as well. Other butadiene units saw slight adjustments. Overall, the butadiene output in December edged up.

As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most China’s butadiene producers mainly held flat in December, accounting for 83% of the total. As for production techniques, the operating rate of butene ODH units declined somewhat. The butene ODH units at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical maintained normal operation. Other butene units at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Shandong Kenli Petrochemical and Shandong Yuhuang Chemical were still in the downtime. The butadiene unit at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical will be likely to restart in January, and the operating rate is resuming.

In January, most butadiene units will maintain normal operation in China. The butadiene units at Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical, Fujian Refining & Petrochemical and Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical will run normally in January. Shandong Weite Chemical and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry plan to restart the butadiene units in early January. Other butadiene units will see no adjustments. Thus, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry will probably surge to a high level in January. The supply will be relatively sufficient.
