Propylene Import Volume Is Expected to Exceed 3,000kt in 2019

Lead: In 2019, the propylene import volume increased obviously Y-O-Y, while the changes from the origin, trade mode, enterprise registered place, etc. were relatively limited. It is predicted that the propylene import volume will exceed 3,000kt in 2019, and the imported resources were still the important supplement to China’s propylene market.

From January to September 2019, the total import volume of propylene increased, with an amount of 2,321.2kt. It is estimated that the annual import volume will reach 3,000kt, up 4.84% Y-O-Y. The main influencing factors were supply, demand and propylene prices. Imported propylene had the competition with the domestic propylene, so the correlation was also strong.

From the perspective of origins, from January to September 2019, the import volume of propylene from South Korea came 1,072.8kt, accounting for 47% of the total. The import volume of propylene from Japan reached 519.9kt, accounting for 23% of the total. The import volume of propylene from Taiwan Province was 495.9kt, accounting for 22% of the total.

From the perspective of trade modes, the general mode remained dominant. From January to September 2019, the import volume of propylene from general trade mode was 2,061.4kt, accounting for 89% of the total. The import volume from processing trade with imported materials was 257.1kt, accounting for about 11% of the total.

From the perspective of enterprise registered places, propylene import enterprises were largely concentrated in East China, North China and Shandong Province. Hereinto, the number of imported propylene by enterprises in Zhejiang ranked first, with the import volume of 883.1kt, accounting for 38% of the total. Jiangsu Province ranked second, with the import volume of 387.8kt, accounting for 17% of the total. Fujian ranked third, and the import volume of propylene was 372.5kt, accounting for 16% of the total.

It is estimated that the total import volume of propylene will reach 3,000kt in 2019, up 4.84% from 2018. The imported propylene is still the important supplementary resource for China’s propylene market. However, with the rapid expansion of the domestic propylene supply, the competition between domestic propylene and imported propylene will be more intense.
