Jul Butadiene Supply Edged down

Up to now, there are 29 butadiene producers in China, with a total capacity of 3,959kt/a. The investigated ones include the total capacity of 650kt/a, 405kt/a, 1,715t/a, 530kt/a, 120kt/a, 369kt/a and 170kt/a, respectively in 5 producers of Northeast China, 3 producers of North China, 12 producers of East China, 3 producers of South China, 1 producer of Southwest China, 3 producers of Northwest China and 2 producers of Central China.

In July, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry ramped down to around 73%. According to SCI, the monthly output was around 240kt in July. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and PetroChina Liaoyang Petrochemical continued to be shut. The butadiene unit at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical was shut again in mid-July, and the restart time is to be determined. PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical shut down its butadiene unit in mid-July. The butadiene unit at Shanghai Secco Petrochemical faced temporary fault in late July. The operating rate of butadiene unit at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia declined. Overall, the butadiene supply in July decreased from June.

As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in July 2019, accounting for around 68% of the total. As for production techniques, the operating rate of butene ODH units went higher slightly. The butadiene unit at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical ran normally. The butene ODH unit at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical was shut down for 10 days since late July. The butadiene units at Shandong Kenli Petrochemical and Shandong Yuhuang Chemical were still in the downtime. Both the two units will not be restarted in the short run. The butadiene unit at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia ran unsteadily, and the whole operating rate was average. The operating rate of C4 extraction units was passable, replenishing the domestic market to some extent.

In August, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and PetroChina Dushanzi Petrochemical will not be restarted. The butadiene unit at PetroChina Liaoyang Petrochemical will run normally in early August. Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical plans to restart the butadiene unit in mid-August, and the restart time of butadiene unit at Shandong Huayu Rubber is to be determined. As seen from new units, the butadiene unit at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology has been tested run in late July, and no products are available for the time being. In August, the unit will continue to be tested run. Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene units in August will decline slightly from July.
