2020-2021 China PE Capacity Growth Analysis
In recent years, China’s PE capacity keeps growing. From 2016 to 2019, the growth rate was in the range of 5.1%-6.8%. 2020 witnessed the intensive capacity expansion, and the growth rate reached 18.4%. In 2021, a total of 11 companies in China plan to add new PE units, which will lift the capacity growth rate to 25.5%. Affected by the intensive commissioning of PE units in China from 2020 to 2021, the supply of China-origin PE increased constantly. Although the demand for some special materials is still dependent on imported products, the homogeneity of general-purpose materials is becoming more and more serious.
As shown in the above chart, the capacity growth rate was not high from 2016 to 2019, which was in the range of 5.1%-6.8%. In 2020, the newly added capacity was 3,500kt/a, and the growth rate reached 18.4%. A total of 11 companies in China plan to add new PE units in 2021, with an estimated new capacity of 5,750kt/a. By the end of 2021, China’s PE capacity will reach 28,308kt/a, and the capacity growth rate will further increase to 25.5%.
