Oct BD Supply to Grow After Inching down in Sep
By late September, China had 45 butadiene enterprises included in the normal operating rate statistics. Their total capacity was 6,956kt/a. The surveyed sample included: 7 enterprises in Northeast China with a total capacity of 890kt/a; 3 in North China totaling 555kt/a; 21 in East China totaling 3,552kt/a; 8 in South China totaling 1,200kt/a (ExxonMobil Huizhou Chemical’s unit capacity revised from 200kt/a to 270kt/a); 1 in Southwest China with 150kt/a; 3 in Northwest China totaling 369kt/a; and 2 in Central China totaling 240kt/a.
In September, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was 70.8%, up 0.67% MoM. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 443.2kt. Within this month, butadiene units at Heze Kexin Chemical, Sinopec Qilu Company (55kt/a), Shandong Wintter Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Wanhua Chemical Group (50kt/a), Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company and PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical remained offline. The 120kt/a butadiene unit at Fujian Refining & Petrochemical was shut down on September 10. The 50kt/a butadiene unit at Sinopec Maoming Company was shut down in mid-September. There were products available from the butadiene unit at Shandong Jinhai Chemical in H2 September. The butadiene unit at Sinopec & SK (Wuhan) Petrochemical has run at around 60% loads since mid-September. Other butadiene units saw limited changes.
Overall, in September, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry edged up MoM. Butadiene units with a total capacity of 940kt/a were shut down in September, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 77.16kt.
As shown above, most of China’s butadiene producers maintained stable operation in September, accounting for around 77% of the total, down 2% MoM. In terms of production technology, among butene ODH units, those at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical remained offline, while Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical and Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia’s units ran normally. From the perspective of C4 extraction technology, butadiene units at PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical, Shandong Shouguang Luqing Petrochemical and Shandong Jinhai Chemical ran at higher loads. Butadiene units at PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical, Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical, Sinopec Maoming Company, Fujian Refining & Petrochemical, Sinopec & SK (Wuhan) Petrochemical and Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical ran at lower loads. Other units saw limited changes. Overall, butadiene supply in China fell MoM.
In October, butadiene units at Heze Kexin Chemical, Sinopec Qilu Company (one set), Shandong Wintter Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, Wanhua Chemical Group (50kt/a) and Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical (Phase II) may remain offline. Butadiene units at Fujian Refining & Petrochemical and Sinopec & SK (Wuhan) Petrochemical have restarted in H1 October. The butadiene unit at North Huajin Chemical Industries has been shut down beyond the plan. The butadiene unit at PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical has restarted in mid-October. The maintenance schedule for Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical’s 60kt/a butadiene unit has been postponed until November. The butadiene unit at Sinopec Guangzhou Company has experienced turnarounds in mid-October. Other butadiene units may remain unchanged, without planned turnarounds. The butadiene unit at Shandong Yulong Petrochemical (Phase II) has been put into operation. PetroChina Guangxi Petrochemical’s butadiene unit is expected to undergo a trial run on October 24. In October, it is projected that the overall supply volume of China’s butadiene units may grow.
