PipeChina Completes Key Gas Storage Expansion
October 31, 2025, PipeChina has finished expanding its massive Wen 23 underground gas storage facility, a project that significantly strengthens the country’s natural gas supply security and its ability to manage seasonal demand swings.
The Phase II expansion of the facility, the largest of its kind in central and eastern China by total capacity, working gas volume, and peak-shaving output, started construction in June 2022. Following its completion, the project adds 1.93 bcm of storage capacity and 520 MCM of working gas.
The enhancement also increases the facility’s daily injection capability by 8 MCM and its daily peak-shaving extraction capacity by 6.5 MCM. Upon reaching full operation, Wen 23’s total capacity is expected to hit 10 bcm, with a working gas volume of 4 bcm. It will be capable of supplying up to 36.5 MCM per day during high-demand periods.
The facility’s Phase I, commissioned in July 2019 with 8.4 bcm of storage capacity, has been a critical pillar of regional energy infrastructure. During the 2021-2022 winter supply season, it extracted a record 1.32 bcm of gas to help meet surge demand.
