Plastic Prohibition: Some Producers Seek for Exemption for PP Bags
Just two weeks after the plastic ban in Tamil Nadu, India took effect, a group of manufacturers found the Madras High Court to seek exemption of PP bags from ban. According to a report in the Times of India, manufacturers of nonwoven PP bags claimed that it was a textile material rather than a plastic material, which was reported to be classified as green textile fabrics. The report also stated that although the government didn’t mention PP bags in the original plastic ban, it clarified and changed the regulation. The government said that there PP bags were forbidden as they could not degrade naturally.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers Association (TAPMA) stated that the plastic ban was “discriminatory”, claiming that plastics continue to be used in many government departments and large private sectors but prohibited in the public and small-sized plastic enterprises. The Indian government prohibits all forms of plastic packaging, including by small retail stores, grocery stores, whereas the same is permitted for multinational corporations (MNCs) and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. This will hit the businesses of over 200,000 small vendors, hawkers, shops, hotels, restaurants, sweet shops, etc.
