February Automobile Industry Performance

In February 2019, affected by the Spring Festival holiday and other factors, the overall production and sales of automobile were at a low level. 

1. February automobile sales in fell 13.8% Y-O-Y

In February, the production and sales of automobiles were 1.41 million and 1.482 million, respectively, down 17.4% and 13.8% Y-O-Y respectively.

From January to February, the production and sales of automobiles totaled 3.376 million and 3.852 million respectively, down 14.1% and 14.9% Y-O-Y respectively.

1.1 Passenger car sales in February decreased by 17.4% Y-O-Y

In February, the production and sales of passenger vehicle were 1.14 million and 1.219 million, down 20.8% and 17.4% Y-O-Y respectively. Among them, the production and sales of car were 544,000 and 580,000, down 16.7% and 14.4% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of SUV were 489,000 and 530,000, down 24.1% and 18.6% Y-O-Y. MPV production and sales were both 84,000, decreasing by 28.1% and 27.2% respectively. The production and sales of small VAN were 23,000 and 21,000, up 7.1% and 16.7% Y-O-Y respectively.

From January to February, the cumulative production and sales of passenger car were 3.137 million and 3.243 million, down 16.8% and 17.5% Y-O-Y respectively. Among them, the production and sales of car were 1.485 million and 1.566 million, down 15.1% and 14.7% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of SUV were 1.365 million and 1.411 million respectively, down 18.4% and 18.6% Y-O-Y respectively. MPV production and sales were both 230,000, decreasing by 21.6% and 27.4% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of small VAN were 57,000 and 48,000 respectively, up 5.5% and 22.1% Y-O-Y respectively.

In February, a total of 523,000 Chinese brand passenger cars were sold, down 25% Y-O-Y, accounting for 42.9% of total passenger car sales.

From January to February, the cumulative sales of Chinese brand passenger cars totaled 1.356 million, down 23% Y-O-Y, accounting for 41.8% of the total sales of passenger cars. Among them, the sales volume of cars was 308,000, down 13.9% Y-O-Y, with a market share of 19.7%. SUV sales were 823,000, down 25.2% Y-O-Y, with a market share of 58.3%. MPV sales were 178,000, down 26.7% Y-O-Y, with a market share of 81.6%.

1.2 February commercial vehicle sales increased by 8% Y-O-Y

In February, the production and sales of commercial vehicles were 270,000 and 262,000, up 1% and 8% respectively. Among them, the production and sales of truck were 254,000 and 243,000, up 3.3% and 8.7% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of bus were 16,000 and 19,000, down 25.8% and 0.1% Y-O-Y respectively.

From January to February, the cumulative production and sales of commercial vehicles were 640,000 and 608,000, up 2.3% and 2% Y-O-Y respectively. According to the production and sales of models, the production and sales of trucks increased by 4.1% and 2.6% Y-O-Y respectively, and the production and sales of bus decreased by 15.6% and 4.1% Y-O-Y respectively.

2. New energy vehicle sales in February increased by 53.6% Y-O-Y

In February, the production and sales of new energy vehicles were 59,000 and 53,000, up 50.9% and 53.6% respectively. Among them, the production and sales of blade electric vehicles were 44,000 and 40,000 up 51.3% and 69.4% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 15,000 and 13,000 respectively, up 48.2% and 18.6% Y-O-Y respectively. 

From January to February, the production and sales of new energy vehicles were 150,000 and 148,000, an increase of 83.5% and 98.9% Y-O-Y respectively. Among them, the production and sales of blade electric vehicles were 111,000 and 114,000, up 95.7% and 127.9% Y-O-Y respectively. The production and sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles were 39,000 and 34,000, up 55.2% and 38.5% Y-O-Y respectively.

3. February automobile exports increased by 2.3% Y-O-Y

In February, the total vehicle exports were 57,000, a Y-O-Y increase of 2.3%. According to the vehicle models, the passenger car exports were 36,000, down 10.8% Y-O-Y; the commercial vehicle exports were 21,000, a Y-O-Y increase of 36.9%.

From January to February, the export of automobile vehicles was 141,000, a Y-O-Y increase of 4%. In terms of vehicle models, passenger cars exports totaled 91,000, down 9.6% Y-O-Y; commercial vehicles exports totaled 50,000, up 42.9% Y-O-Y.
