In March 2020, China’s PP output totaled 2,048kt, up 14.11% M-O-M and up 6.46% Y-O-Y. The overall output is rallying gradually. China’s PP market prices declined in March, but the overall operating rate of PP units increased in each region. The growth rates of PP output hovered at 2%-20%. Therein, in East China, the growth rate of PP output was the largest at 19.53%, as only two unis at Oriental Energy New Material (Ningbo) and Oriental Energy (Zhangjiagang) New Material were shut down in March. Moreover, the unit at Oriental Energy (Zhangjiagang) New Material resumed production quickly a month later. Besides, the growth rate of PP output in Southwest China was only 2.6%, as PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical remained in shutdown for about a week in H2 March.
Most of the PP output via various production technologies mounted up in March. However, due to the shutdown of PP units at Oriental Energy New Material (Ningbo) and Oriental Energy (Zhangjiagang) New Material, the output of PP via PDH technology was affected in March and decreased by 0.63% M-O-M. In addition, there was no outsourcing propylene-based PP units undergoing maintenance in March, and previously-stopped units mostly resumed production. Therefore, the output of outsourcing propylene-based PP increased by 39kt or 39.4% M-O-M.
