Largely Stable MTBE Capacity in 2020
From 2016 to 2020, China’s MTBE capacity kept rising, but the growth of MTBE capacity greatly slowed down from 2018. In 2020, China’s MTBE capacity further rose. As of September 2020, China’s MTBE capacity totaled 23,260kt/a, up 1.75% Y-O-Y.
In fact, China’s MTBE capacity was severely surplus, so MTBE producers adopted cautious attitudes to newly added MTBE units. Moreover, influenced by the heavy market competition, the growth of the future MTBE demand will slow down. Up to September 2020, there was a newly added MTBE unit at Liaoning Bora Chemical with the capacity of 120kt/a, and other newly added MTBE capacity was mainly due to the capacity expansion.
