Accidental Explosion Occurred at Formosa Plastics in Kaohsiung
According to SCI, an unexpected explosion occurred at Formosa Plastics in Linyuan District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan Province at about 14:30 pm on May 15, 2020. The initial cause may be the burning of the stored plastic granules. In Linyuan District, it involved 400kt/a polypropylene (PP) unit and 180kt/a polyethylene (PE) unit.
According to SCI’s research, the reason of the explosion was smoldering of the finished product caused by the cracking of the top of the polyolefin storage tank, and the fire was controlled in time. In terms of units, the storage unit and the cracking unit line were separated, so the PP unit and the 180kt/a PE unit in Linyuan District were unaffected. Formosa Plastics has shut down the affected storage tanks. Considering its unaffected PP unit and sufficient inventories of finished products, SCI reckons that it is hard for this accident to affect China’s market supply.
