Feb Butadiene Supply Edged down
Up to now, there are 32 butadiene producers in China, with a total capacity of 4,399kt/a. The investigated ones include the total capacity of 790kt/a, 405kt/a, 2,015t/a, 530kt/a, 120kt/a, 369kt/a and 170kt/a, respectively in 6 producers of Northeast China, 3 producers of North China, 14 producers of East China, 3 producers of South China, 1 producer of Southwest China, 3 producers of Northwest China and 2 producers of Central China.
In February, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry dropped to around 69.4%. According to SCI, the monthly output was around 252kt. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Shandong Huayu Rubber continued to remain shut. The butadiene unit at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology was also shut down in early February. The operating rate of other units at private enterprises also edged down. From mid-February, the matched butadiene units of ethylene cracking units were cut the loads slightly. Although the butadiene units at Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical and Hengli Petrochemical ran normally, the overall operating rate still declined from last month. Overall, in February, China’s butadiene supply decreased from last month. However, as the demand also dropped notably, China’s butadiene resources were still sufficient.
As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly edged down in February, accounting for around 82% of the total. As the new butadiene units at Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical and Hengli Petrochemical went into production, the operating rate of the overall butadiene industry moved up M-O-M.
As for production techniques, the operating rate of butene ODH units continued to go down from last month. The operating rate at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical was largely stable and that at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia edged down. The butadiene unit at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical ran normally. The butene ODH units at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Shandong Kenli Petrochemical and Shandong Yuhuang Chemical were still in downtime. The operating rate of the C4 extraction unit inched down from last month. The supply of domestic butadiene resources was relatively stable.
In March, the butadiene units at Shandong Weite Chemical and Shandong Huayu Rubber will continue to remain shut. In H1 of March, the butadiene unit at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology will not start up. Some butadiene units will continue to run at low operating rates. In H2 of March, the butadiene producers will uplift the operating rates. Overall, it is estimated that the operating rate of butadiene units in March will move up from February.
