2022 China SM and BZ Production and Maintenance Schedule
2022 is still a busy year for the benzene industry chain market, and the industry participants will continue to focus on the production of benzene and styrene capacity. The styrene units at Wanhua Chemical and Ningbo ZRCC Lyondell Chemical were put into operation at the beginning of 2022, which opened a new chapter in the industry.
According to the research of SCI, the output loss of benzene caused by maintenance in 2022 will be about 353.7kt, which is 596.2kt lower than the actual output loss in 2021. However, considering that there were some temporary maintenance in 2021, and the maintenance time of some units this year are not determined, the output loss in 2022 should be higher than the current figure.
According to the current maintenance plan, it is expected that a total of 4,288 kt/a of styrene unit will be involved in turnarounds in 2022, and the output loss is expected to be around 260kt. Considering that there will be many new styrene units coming on line in 2022, there will be a steady increase in the supply of styrene in 2022.
In terms of maintenance time, the maintenance of benzene units in 2022 is mostly concentrated in March to May, and that of downstream styrene units will be concentrated from February to April. The output loss of styrene will be high especially in March, when Shanghai Secco Petrochemical, Ningbo ZRCC Lyondell Chemical and other large enterprises all have maintenance plans. In March, the output loss will reach 95.8kt and the demand for benzene may decrease by about 75.7kt.
In 2022, the capacity of benzene is expected to increase by 3.66 million mt/a, and that of styrene will increase by 6.3 million mt/a. Among the 12 new styrene units, only those at Sinopec Luoyang Petrochemical, Sinopec Maoming Petrochemical, PetroChina Guangdong Petrochemical, Shenghong Petrochemical and Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical are equipped with supporting benzene units, with a total capacity of 3.12 million mt/a. The total capacity of styrene that needs to purchase benzene as feedstock is 3.18 million mt/a, accounting for 50.48%. Judging from the operation time of the new units, the output contribution of new benzene units is expected to be 2,205kt in 2022, and the output contribution of new styrene units is 4,045.6kt, which is still much higher than that of benzene.
