Edible & Industrial Ethanol Capacity & Output Declined in 2021
In 2021, China’s edible and industrial ethanol capacity declined to 14,354kt/a. For producers expanded their capacity and there was one new entrant. In the past two years, at least 839kt/a capacity was eliminated, which was mainly caused by the intensified industry competition and low profits or profit losses. Some enterprises suffered from capacity issues, and shut down their units for a long time. Currently, of all the 152 producers with a total capacity of 14,354kt/a, only 88 were in production in 2021 with the effective capacity of 10,549kt/a.
In 2021, China’s edible and industrial ethanol output also showed a downtrend, decreasing to 6,004.4kt, down 243.3kt from 2020. In Northeast China, the output in 2021 was 2,142kt, down 577.4kt from 2020, which was mainly caused by the profit losses. The output in East China and Shandong increased to 1,154kt and 727kt respectively in 2021, up 403.9kt and 159.8kt respectively from 2020. The increment was mainly supported by the increasing profits from producing cassava-based ethanol.
