China’s First Methanol Dual Fuel Green Ship was Launched
On June 20, 2022, China's first methanol dual fuel powered green ship was delivered and left the factory in Nansha, Guangzhou. The ship is self-designed and constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. It is a 49,900 dwt ship for chemicals/oil products and equipped with the world’s leading methanol dual fuel drive system. It can realize the carbon neutral of the ship fuel’s full life cycle by using green methanol, contributing to the global carbon emission reduction. A total of 6 methanol dual fuel powered ships have been ordered. 3 ships have been launched and released from the dock, and others will be completed and delivered successively.
The ship is equipped with methanol dual fuel drive system which has four fuel drive modes using fuel, fuel hydrate, methanol and methanol hydrate respectvely. This is the first time to apply hydrate fuel in the ship field, and it can control the combustion state in order to reduce emissions. Meanwhile, it can meet the highest level in the international maritime organization requirements without waste gas processing system installed.
It is learned that methanol can be used in more than 100 ports in the world at present. Compared to the similar alternatives such as LNG, methanol is more convenient in storage and transportation, and the infrastructure reconstruction costs are lower. With outstanding cost and security advantages, methanol is developing rapidly as the most feasible marine fuel alternative with least emission and lowest cost.
