Jun China Butadiene Supply to Gear Up
By the end of May, there are 43 butadiene producers included in the normal load calculation in China, with a total capacity of 6,466kt/a. The sample capacity is divided by region as follows.
China Butadiene Producer Capacity by Region

In May, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was around 58.86%, down 5.17% from last month. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 352.8kt in May. Within this month, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia, Shandong Wintter Chemical, PetroChina Liaoyang Petrochemical and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry remained offline. Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Phase I restarted its butadiene unit on May 15. The butadiene unit at North Huajin Chemical Industries was restarted on May 11. Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase I and Wanhua Chemical Group shut down their butadiene units in early May. Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical shut down its butadiene unit in mid-to-late May. The butadiene units at Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company and Shanghai Secco Petrochemical were shut down in mid-May. The operating rate of other butadiene units saw minor changes.
Overall, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry leveled down M-O-M. Butadiene units with a total capacity of 1,401kt/a were shut in May, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 85.428kt.

As seen from the above chart, the operating rate of units at most of China’s butadiene producers mainly remained stable in May, taking up 83% of the total roughly and down 6% Y-O-Y. As for production technologies, butadiene units via butene ODH technology remained offline. As seen from the butadiene units via C4 extraction technology, the operating rates of butadiene units at PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical, Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical and Shandong Jinhai Chemical floated up M-O-M, whilst those at PetroChina Liaoyang Petrochemical, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical, North Huajin Chemical Industries, Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase I, Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical, Wanhua Chemical Group and Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical pared down M-O-M. On the whole, in May, China’s butadiene supply descended M-O-M, taking cues from intensive units’ maintenance.
In June, the butadiene units at Shandong Yuhuang Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia, Shandong Wintter Chemical and Shanghai Secco Petrochemical will remain offline. The butadiene units at Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical, PetroChina Liaoyang Petrochemical and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry are expected to run normally in early June. Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical Phase I and Wanhua Chemical Group plan to restart their butadiene units in end-June. Shenghong Petrochemical may face brief hiccups in June. PetroChina Daqing Petrochemical, PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical and Sinopec Maoming Company plan to take maintenance of their butadiene units in June as well. Other butadiene units will run normally. On the whole, it is envisaged that the butadiene supply will ramp up somewhat in June.
