Sep BD Supply to Gain After Growing in Aug
By late August, China had 45 butadiene enterprises included in the normal operating rate data. Their total capacity was 6,956kt/a. The surveyed sample included: 7 enterprises in Northeast China with a total capacity of 890kt/a; 3 in North China totaling 555kt/a; 21 in East China totaling 3,552kt/a; 8 in South China totaling 1,200kt/a (ExxonMobil Huizhou Chemical’s unit capacity revised from 200kt/a to 270kt/a); 1 in Southwest China with 150kt/a; 3 in Northwest China totaling 369kt/a; and 2 in Central China totaling 240kt/a.
In August, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry was 69.43%, up 3.02 percentage points MoM. According to SCI, the monthly output of butadiene was around 449.1kt. Within this month, butadiene units at Heze Kexin Chemical, Sinopec Qilu Company (55kt/a), Shandong Wintter Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Wanhua Chemical Group (50kt/a), Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, ChemChina Puyang Bluestar New Material and Shandong Jinhai Chemical remained offline. The butadiene unit at Fujian Refining & Petrochemical restarted in early August, and that at Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical (Phase III) restarted in mid-August. The butadiene unit at Sinopec Maoming Company was briefly shut down during the month. Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical’s 100kt/a C4 extraction unit restarted in mid-August, and its 50kt/a butene ODH unit restarted in late August. The butadiene unit at PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical was shut down for maintenance on August 14. Other butadiene units saw limited changes.
Overall, in August, the operating rate of China’s butadiene industry moved up MoM. Butadiene units with a total capacity of 1,390kt/a were shut down in August, and it was estimated that the output losses caused by maintenance reached around 85.71kt.
As shown above, in August, operating rates of most butadiene producers in China remained stable, accounting for about 79% of the total, an increase of 8 percentage points from the previous month. In terms of production technology, among the butene ODH units, those at Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology and Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical were shut down, while the unit at Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical was restarted after a shutdown within the month, and the unit at Jiutai Energy Inner Mongolia ran normally. Regarding operating rates of C4 extraction units, butadiene units at PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical, Shandong Jinhai Chemical, Shanghai Secco Petrochemical, Fujian Refining & Petrochemical, Zhejiang Petroleum & Chemical (Phase III), Shenghong Petrochemical, Sanjiang Chemical and Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical ran at higher loads. Other units operated stably. Overall, China’s butadiene supply rose MoM.
In September, butadiene units at Heze Kexin Chemical, Sinopec Qilu Company (one set), Shandong Wintter Chemical, Nanjing Chengzhi Yongqing Energy Technology, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical, Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Company, ChemChina Puyang Bluestar New Material, Wanhua Chemical Group (50kt/a) and PetroChina Fushun Petrochemical may remain offline. The butadiene unit at Shandong Jinhai Chemical may restart in mid-September. The butadiene unit at Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical (phase II) is forecasted to undergo maintenance in late September. Other butadiene units may remain unchanged, without planned turnarounds. PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical’s new unit is expected to run normally, with a planned shutdown for revamp at the Phase I unit, failing to notably influence the total butadiene output. In September, it is projected that the overall supply volume of China’s butadiene units may keep growing.
