The Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) has moved ahead with plans to expand cargo-handling capacity at Gwadar Port by initiating the hiring of a consultancy firm for the infrastructure development of an off-dock terminal, according to a notification issued by the authority.
The GPA has invited national consultancy firms registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council to submit proposals for the planning and design of the project. The consultant will be selected under Pakistan’s public procurement rules using a quality- and cost-based selection method through a single-stage, one-envelope bidding process.
Proposals are required to be submitted electronically through the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority’s (PPRA) e-procurement system by December 30, with bids scheduled to be opened later the same morning.
The proposed off-dock terminal is intended to support port operations by shifting container storage, customs clearance, and logistics activities away from the main harbor area. Such facilities are widely used at major ports to reduce congestion and improve cargo turnaround times as trade volumes grow.
The project is expected to create dedicated cargo-handling infrastructure outside the port gates, improving operational efficiency while allowing room for future expansion.
The consultancy hiring follows an earlier tender issued in November, when the GPA invited construction firms to bid for the execution of infrastructure works related to the same off-dock terminal project, indicating that the development has moved from planning toward implementation.

The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) on Monday commissioned the 500-kilovolt Lahore North Grid Station, a major power transmission project aimed at strengthening electricity supply to Punjab’s industrial heartland and improving evacuation of energy generated under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The project, implemented by NGC, has been completed at a cost of Rs. 20.7 billion with financing from the Asian Development Bank under its Multi-Tranche Financing Facility.
The newly operational grid station has a transformation capacity of 3,000 megavolt amperes (MVA) at the 500/220kV level and 750 MVA at the 220/132kV level. It is connected through 113 kilometers of 500kV and 45 kilometers of 220kV transmission lines, integrating Lahore with the national transmission network.
Officials said the grid station will play a critical role in evacuating power from major generation sources, including coal-fired plants developed under CPEC, while ensuring optimal utilization of the ±660kV Lahore–Matiari High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line, a flagship corridor project jointly developed by Pakistan and China.
“This grid station is a strategic addition to Pakistan’s transmission backbone and directly supports power projects established under CPEC,” said NGC Managing Director Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik at the commissioning ceremony. “It will significantly improve system reliability, reduce transmission losses, and ensure stable electricity supply for millions of consumers.”
The Lahore North Grid Station is expected to ease pressure on existing substations in Lahore, Gujranwala and adjacent regions, while improving voltage profiles for industrial, commercial, agricultural and domestic consumers.
This strategic achievement underscores NGC’s vision of building a resilient, efficient and future-ready power transmission network capable of supporting Pakistan’s economic aspirations, as per the company’s statement which further added that by strengthening the transmission backbone serving one of the country's most economically vibrant regions, Lahore North Grid Station represents “a cornerstone in ensuring energy security and supporting sustainable development”.
Pakistan has added thousands of megawatts to its generation capacity over the past decade, much of it through CPEC cooperation with China. However, officials acknowledge that strengthening transmission and distribution networks remains critical to fully realizing the benefits of these investments.

The University of Sargodha on Monday inaugurated the weeklong 2nd Annual Research Arena 2025, an academic and research event featuring multiple exhibitions and scholarly activities.
As part of the opening, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas inaugurated a Citrus Exhibition, along with a Research Expo and an Industrial Expo, jointly organized by the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) and the Institute of Food Science and Nutrition.
Sargodha is widely regarded as Pakistan’s leading producer of Kinnow mandarins and serves as the country’s main wholesale hub for the citrus variety, which dominates national production and exports.
While the Sargodha event focused on academic research and industry engagement, a separate study published in late 2025 highlights the broader economic importance of citrus and identifies China-Pakistan cooperation as a potential driver of sectoral revival.
The research, published in Policy Research Journal in late (Issue 10, 2025), examines Pakistan’s citrus production, market structure and the potential impact of agricultural cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Karachi, with contributions from the Applied Economics Research Center (AERC).
According to the study, Pakistan ranks as the 13th-largest citrus producer globally, with annual output exceeding 2.2 million tonnes. Citrus accounts for more than 30 percent of Pakistan’s total fruit production, while Punjab produces over 90 percent of the country’s citrus supply. The sector provides livelihoods to hundreds of thousands of people, particularly in rural areas.
Despite strong production, the study notes that citrus exports have declined in recent years due to climate stress, aging orchards and weak logistics infrastructure, undermining Pakistan’s competitiveness in international markets.
Researchers describe CPEC as a potential “game-changer” for the citrus sector, citing Chinese investment in transport, storage and port infrastructure. Improved road and rail connectivity linking citrus-growing regions to Gwadar Port could reduce post-harvest losses and transportation costs, helping Pakistani citrus compete more effectively in Chinese and regional markets.
The study also highlights Gwadar Port’s growing strategic importance for agricultural trade, noting that its integration into CPEC logistics networks could open new export corridors for fresh fruit, support cold-chain development and encourage agro-processing backed by Chinese technology.
In addition, the research points to expanding China-Pakistan cooperation in agricultural research and technology transfer, including modern irrigation systems, disease-resistant varieties and improved post-harvest handling practices to address long-standing productivity challenges faced by citrus growers.
China is identified as a high-potential market as demand for imported fruit continues to rise. With improved quality standards, logistics and compliance with Chinese phytosanitary requirements, Pakistan could significantly expand citrus exports under the second phase of CPEC, the researchers said.
The study concludes that deeper China-Pakistan cooperation, combining infrastructure development, agricultural innovation and market access, could revive citrus exports, raise farmer incomes and strengthen long-term food and trade connectivity between the two countries.
