Hello everybody, welcome to E-cubed!
Today's easy English expression is really super easy:
"How are you doing?"
But very rarely will you hear an American say:
"How are you doing?"
Usually, we say:
"How you doing?"
"How you doing?"
So the expression "How are you doing?" — how do we say it?
"How you doing?"
"How you doing?"
In daily English pronunciation:
"How" sounds almost like "ha" — the "w" is gone.
"You" has three pronunciations:
You
Ya
Yeah
Here, we say "yeah".
So: "Ha, yeah, doing?"
"Doing" — the "ing" has three pronunciations:
in
un (like a schwa + n)
in (again)
We use "doing" — "doin'"
So: "Ha, yeah, doin'?"
"How you doin'?"
"How you doin'?"
So the next time you're walking down the street and you see an American — maybe a big American flag — why don’t you say:
"How you doin'?"
You might be able to use this conversation:
— "How you doin'?"
— "Great!"
— "How you doin'?"
— "Not too bad, thanks. Take it easy."
And you can use that conversation when you're walking by.
So it's like:
— "How you doin'?"
— "Great!"
— "How you doin'?"
— "Not too bad, thanks. Take it easy."
Yeah!
Do you get it? I hope you get it.
You need to practice. The next time you see me, or maybe some other American — try it!
"How you doin'?"
"Great!"
"How you doin'?"
"Not too bad, thanks. Take it easy."
