屋面艺术中心·锐角画廊荣幸呈现荷兰艺术家、设计师马克·范·瓦赫宁根（Mark van Wageningen）个人项目「自己动手」Novo Typo D.I.Y。本次展览以“Offgrid”可持续设计理念为核心，系统呈现艺术家在字体、材料与自然系统交互领域的探索成果，旨在重构设计实践同在地资源、手工技艺与生态伦理之间的深层关联。作为中意艺术研究会系列学术活动之一，本次展览亦致力于通过跨文化对话拓展艺术与设计的研究边界。

马克的创作立足于对工业化设计范式的反思。2020年，他发起“Offgrid”研究项目，以颜料、纸张、字体为原点，通过植物根茎、废弃纸张、土壤等自然材料，重新定义设计的物质基础，构建起一套脱离标准化工业模型的色彩系统与美学语言。他的实践一直秉持着“设计应从脚下土地开始”的可持续理念。其作品不仅关注视觉表达，更延伸至设计生态的整体构建。

我们期待以本次展览为契机，引发艺术与设计领域对创作自主性、材料伦理与可持续美学的深入思考。马克·范·瓦赫宁根的实践，不仅展示了一种自给自足的设计路径，也为全球化语境下的资源循环与文化互动提供了具有启发性的参照。

Roof Art Center & Acute Angle Gallery is proud to present "Novo Typo D.I.Y," a solo project by Dutch artist and designer Mark van Wageningen. This exhibition, centered on the "Offgrid" sustainable design concept, systematically presents the artist's explorations in the interaction of typography, materials, and natural systems, aiming to reconstruct the profound connection between design practice and local resources, craftsmanship, and ecological ethics. As part of the Sino-Italian Art Research Association's series of academic activities, this exhibition also strives to expand the research boundaries of art and design through cross-cultural dialogue.

Mark's work is rooted in a reflection on the industrialized design paradigm. In 2020, he launched the "Offgrid" research project, using pigments, paper, and typography as starting points, and redefining the material basis of design through natural materials such as plant roots, waste paper, and soil. This resulted in a color system and aesthetic language that breaks away from standardized industrial models. His practice has always adhered to the sustainable philosophy that "design should begin with the land beneath our feet." His work not only focuses on visual expression but also extends to the overall construction of a design ecosystem.

We hope that this exhibition will serve as a catalyst for deeper reflection in the fields of art and design on creative autonomy, material ethics, and sustainable aesthetics. Marc van Wageningen's practice not only demonstrates a self-sufficient design path but also provides an inspiring reference for resource recycling and cultural interaction in a globalized context.

2025年10月8日下午，荷兰艺术家马克·范·瓦赫宁根（Mark van Wageningen）个人展览「自己动手」Novo Typo D.I.Y在广州屋面艺术中心隆重开幕。本次活动汇聚了艺术家、设计师、艺术爱好者及广州美术学院的师生们，共同见证了一场融合字体、色彩、自然与可持续理念的深度对话。

马克·范·瓦赫宁根在中意艺术研究会系列讲座之“Novo Typo Offgrid”可持续设计研究项目分享其创作心路与实践哲学，讲述了Offgrid项目的起源与发展，以及其在米兰设计周、深圳海上世界文化艺术中心等国际展览中的实践成果。

他强调，“设计，应从你脚下的土地开始”，体现了其作为“设计生态”构建者的深远思考。该项目自2020年在阿姆斯特丹启动以来，致力于构建一套自给自足、就地取材的设计系统。马克以自然材料重新诠释设计的三大基本元素——颜料、纸张与字体，使用植物根茎、废弃纸张与土壤制作颜料，并建立了一套源于自然的色彩和谐模型，探索在脱离工业化供应链的条件下持续创作的可能。

On the afternoon of October 8, 2025, Dutch artist Mark van Wageningen's solo exhibition, "Do It Yourself," Novo Typo D.I.Y., grandly opened at the Guangzhou Roof Art Center. The event brought together artists, designers, art enthusiasts, and faculty and students from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to witness a profound dialogue integrating typography, color, nature, and sustainability.

Mark van Wageningen shared his creative journey and practical philosophy on the "Offgrid" sustainable design research project in the Sino-Italian Art Research Association's series of lectures. He talked about the origin and development of the Offgrid project, as well as its practical results in international exhibitions such as Milan Design Week and Shenzhen Sea World Culture and Art Center.

He emphasized that "design should begin with the land beneath your feet," reflecting his profound thinking as a builder of a "design ecosystem." Launched in Amsterdam in 2020, the project is dedicated to building a self-sufficient, locally sourced design system. Mark reinterprets the three fundamental elements of design—pigment, paper, and typography—with natural materials. He uses plant roots, discarded paper, and soil to create pigments and establishes a naturally derived color harmony model, exploring the possibility of sustainable creation without industrial supply chains.

在马克发言结束后，活动进入「自己动手」版画印刷工作坊环节。参与者将在艺术家及其助手Sarah的指导下，使用植物染料、手工纸张与木活字亲手创作版画，亲身体验回归本真、自给自足的创作状态。

本次活动不仅系统呈现了NovoTypo在可持续字体与色彩系统方面的前沿探索，也为观众提供了互动参与的平台，助力推动设计理念的在地化实践与公众美育传播。展览现已正式面向公众开放，展期将持续至十二月中旬。欢迎广大艺术爱好者前来观展，在色彩与自然中，寻找属于自己的创作节奏。

Following Mark's speech, the event transitioned to a "Do It Yourself" printmaking workshop. Under the guidance of the artist and his assistant, Sarah, participants will create their own prints using vegetable dyes, handmade paper, and woodblock type, experiencing a return to a state of authenticity and self-sufficiency in their creative endeavors.

This event not only systematically showcased NovoTypo's cutting-edge explorations in sustainable typefaces and color systems, but also provided a platform for audience engagement, helping to promote the localization of design concepts and the dissemination of aesthetic education. The exhibition is now open to the public and will run until mid-December. Art enthusiasts are welcome to visit and discover their own creative rhythm amidst color and nature.

The successful hosting of Mark van Wageningen's solo project "Novo Typo DIY," along with the "Novo Typo Offgrid" sustainable design research lecture and printmaking workshop, is not only a significant achievement of the Sino-Italian Art Research Association's academic series of activities, but also provides forward-looking practical insights into the intersection of art, design, and sustainable concepts. The creative energy and in-depth reflections sparked by the events have injected new vitality into the Association's future academic positioning and development path.

Founder and designer of Novo Typo, a typeface and graphic design research studio based in Amsterdam. He is the author of several award-winning design books, including Typewood, and his work has been translated into English, German, and Chinese. Novo Typo's design philosophy is deeply rooted in a love of craft and an exploratory research into design, production techniques, tools, materials, and their context. The studio's creative work blends the cutting edge of design, applied art, and craft, showcasing a seamless fusion of all three.
