Sparkpool Splits 2,100 ETH Mining Fee with Accidental Sender
Sparkpool, an Ethereum mining pool, has finally managed to locate and verify the sender behind the 2,100 ETH ($300,000) fee sent on February 19. Sparkpool asked the sender to verify the payment by sending 0.022517 ETH using the same 0x587 that was used to send the first payment. Data from Etherscan shows the owner sent the requested amount on the same day and Sparkpool negotiated with the sender and both agreed that Sparkpool would keep half of the 2,100 ETH for pool miners entitled to the reward. The remaining 1,050 ETH have already been returned and Sparkpool mentioned that the sender was a South Korea-based blockchain firm.

Some Regulators Are Calling 2019 the “Year of the Blockchain”
Regulators have eased concerns surrounding regulation over blockchain technology as many consider it might stifle the development of the industry. Yahoo Finance reported that on March 7, 2019, during this year’s DC Blockchain Summit in Washington, D.C, regulators have eased these concerns when telling attendees they considered the technology would flourish throughout 2019. Tom Emmer, a U.S. Representative (R-Minnesota), presented the technology to Congress with the intention of inspiring coordinated government oversight. Emmer, who is also the co-chair for the Congressional Blockchain Caucus, stated that 2019 stands to be the year of the blockchain, the year we separate hype from reality, and begin harnessing blockchain in the right-use cases to lower costs and increase efficiency.

Paxos’ Precious Metal-Backed Cryptocurrency to Launch This Year, CEO Says
Blockchain trust company Paxos’ digital token backed by precious metals will be launched "definitely this year," said Paxos CEO, Chad Cascarilla in an interview with Fortune on March 11. “We are excited about the concept of being able to take a commodity, and I think precious metals are really obvious ones, and gold is probably the most obvious and being able to tokenize it,” Cascarilla added. In order to implement the concept, Paxos has to ensure it holds the amount of inventory “in the real world” equal to the one registered on blockchain. While the company is planning to launch its precious metal-backed coin this year, Cascarilla said that Paxos has not set the exact date yet.

EU Report Calls for Blockchain Interoperability Standards
A recent report to the European Union made recommendations on how to better develop blockchain technology, including the introduction of interoperability and scalability standards. The report was published by the European Union Blockchain Observatory and Forum on March 6. It provides insight into the current and potential future states of blockchain in Europe, considering the input of different stakeholders and sources. The authors recommend standards for digital identities and interoperability between blockchains, stating that “we can expect that over time it will become easier and easier for disparate blockchains to work together. This will be to the benefit of the ecosystem as a whole.” The report also points out the need to support basic research and implementation of infrastructure-related projects. The report advises policy makers and industry players to cooperate in improving and developing blockchain technology and its governance. It also recommends that the EU takes a wait-and-see approach and provides projects with the time to experiment and learn, prior to the creation of standards or governance-related regulations.
