品味空间 Vol.08 | 挪威工作室 Ask og Eng：以三处空间延展生活的沉静秩序

故事，从一间厨房开始。2016年，Kine Ask Stenersen 与 Kristoffer Eng 在挪威 Drammen 创立了 Ask og Eng 工作室。一切并不是从品牌规划或商业目标出发，而是从一个非常具体、也非常私人的动机开始——他们想为自己的公寓，打造一套真正符合心意的厨房。在一次建筑项目中，Kristoffer 接触到了"竹"这种材料，与此同时，拥有环境可持续背景的 Kine 也愈发迷恋空间与材料本身。于是，在几乎毫无施工经验的情况下，他们决定亲手为自己的家完成一整套竹制厨房。

The story begins with a kitchen.In 2016, Kine Ask Stenersen and Kristoffer Eng founded Ask og Eng in Drammen, Norway. It did not begin with a business plan or a brand strategy, but with something far more personal and specific—a desire to create a kitchen for their own apartment that truly reflected how they wanted to live.During an architectural project, Kristoffer encountered bamboo for the first time. At the same time, Kine—whose background is in environmental sustainability—found herself increasingly drawn to spatial design and materials.These two threads came together, and despite having no construction experience, they decided to build an entire bamboo kitchen for their home with their own hands.

And in that moment, they also found the direction that would shape everything to come —placing bamboo at the center of their practice, and responding to space with an approach that is honest, restrained, and deeply connected to everyday life.This story begins with The Studio in Mallorca.Following its thread, our conversation led us into three interconnected spaces:the studio in Mallorca, the workshop in Drammen, and The House — a place thatfunctions both as a home and a showroom.Across these three rhythms, the essence of Ask og Eng becomes clear:a way of creating that remains consistent in its values,and a way of living that is slow, intentional, and quietly assured.

The Studio：马略卡的新创作空间 

The Studio in Mallorca

为什么是马略卡？这是我们交流时提出的第一个问题。而决定在这里设立工作室，其实是来自几个早期的契机。Ask og Eng 曾在西班牙 Balearic 群岛完成过数个项目，而那几次合作让他们看见了岛屿所拥有的创作潜力。"马略卡岛的节奏更慢、更贴近土地，也更符合我们习惯的生活方式与工作方式。虽然挪威仍然是我们的核心基地——那里有我们的工坊与展示空间——但随着国际项目逐渐增加，在马略卡建立一个据点对我们来说更像是一次自然的延伸。" Kine 与 Kristoffer 告诉我们，马略卡为他们提供了一个不同的文化与视觉语境，与他们斯堪的纳维亚根性形成互补：温暖、触感丰富，也充满地中海式的开放性。

Why Mallorca? This was the first question we asked in our conversation. The decision to establish a studio here, they explained, came from a series of early encounters. Ask og Eng had completed several projects in the Balearic Islands, and those collaborations revealed the creative potential embedded in the landscape. “Mallorca moves at a slower, more grounded rhythm, and it aligns closely with the way we prefer to work and live. Although Norway remains our core base — with our workshop and showspace — the growing number of international projects made it feel natural for us to have a presence here.” For Kine and Kristoffer, Mallorca offers a cultural and visual context distinct from, yet complementary to, their Scandinavian roots: warmer, more tactile, and shaped by the openness of Mediterranean life.

“Norway gives us structure and precision; Mallorca gives us openness and spontaneity.” Kine and Kristoffer shared that Norway and Mallorca represent two distinctly different climates, rhythms, and cultures—and that this contrast is something they deeply value. It continues to shape and inspire their practice. In Norway, they are grounded in a slower, season-driven pace and a strong tradition of craftsmanship. The workshop in Drammen is where everything is made—hands-on, meticulous, and rooted in their Norwegian identity. Mallorca, however, brings a different kind of energy: warmer, more open, and more sensory, creating a natural resonance with bamboo, the material they work with most. Here, the rhythm is slower, more intuitive, and more exploratory. They spend more time experimenting, sketching, and letting the material guide the process; it feels, they said, like returning to “the essence of making.”

In Mallorca, the day often begins with the rhythm of family life—getting the children ready for school, breakfast, the sound of the door closing as they leave. When the house becomes quiet again, Kine and Kristoffer have their first coffee in the courtyard before easing into work. The hours that follow might involve sketching new ideas, developing material samples, video calls with the team in Drammen, or welcoming clients and collaborators into the space. By evening, the rhythm shifts back into family life: cooking, music, and, when time allows, a walk or a swim. Here, work and life are not separated but instead nourish each other, unfolding as one continuous flow.

Kine 与 Kristoffer 告诉我们，在马略卡的地中海语境中，竹材被重新诠释：它不再被视为一种热带或亚洲材料，而成为一种适应气候、建筑与生活方式的可持续解决方案。"我们特别兴奋的一件作品，是在马略卡开发的 AE24 Studio Bamboo Sofa。它从一个简单的想法开始：我们希望创造一件能体现地中海式开放生活方式，同时保持斯堪的纳维亚克制美学的家具。"他们说到，在这里，竹材更是一种设计态度：自然、在地、并且富有持久生命力。

Kine and Kristoffer explained that in the Mediterranean context of Mallorca, bamboo takes on an entirely new expression. It is no longer perceived as a tropical or Asian material, but as a sustainable solution that responds naturally to the island’s climate, architecture, and way of living. “One piece we are particularly excited about is the AE24 Studio Bamboo Sofa, which was developed here in Mallorca. It began with a simple idea: we wanted to create a piece that reflects the openness of Mediterranean living while still staying true to our Scandinavian sense of restraint.” In this environment, they noted, bamboo becomes more than a material — it becomes a design attitude: natural, locally attuned, and imbued with a long-lasting sense of life.

Kine and Kristoffer preserve a sense of Nordic calm through natural materials, clean lines, and a restrained palette, while large openings allow light to flow freely and blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The materials and colors echo the landscape of Mallorca, giving the Studio a warmth and stillness that form a subtle balance between Scandinavian minimalism and Mediterranean lightness. Here, they can prototype, test materials, and live alongside their work — a way of making that continually pushes them to consider what Ask og Eng can become. Their perspective has expanded from furniture and kitchen design toward a more holistic understanding of “spatial experience.”

Within the Ask og Eng practice, The Workshop in Drammen operates with precision and structure — it is the place where every piece is “truly made.” They describe it as the heart of Ask og Eng: “Every piece of furniture and every kitchen begins its story here.” The space carries not only craftsmanship, but also a personal history. The building once housed the workplace of Kristoffer’s grandfather. Today, in the very same rooms, the team continues to work with their hands and speak through materials, allowing a quiet, intergenerational craft tradition to persist and evolve.

The Workshop sits inside an old industrial building in Drammen, where the air often carries the subtle scent of freshly cut bamboo. The sounds of tools and machines rise and fall, and craftspeople move with a steady, focused rhythm along the long worktables. The space is filled with the presence of material: touched, examined, cut, and joined. Structures take shape here, and details are refined—often millimeter by millimeter.

For many years, Ask og Eng have approached this place with a slow and steady rhythm of learning, shaping, and building — meeting materials with the most unassuming form of respect. “We make things because we care,” they said. In a world that moves ever faster, The Workshop in Norway offers a different kind of pace — one that trusts patience, trusts materials, and trusts the quiet discipline of working by hand.

The House：既是展厅也是家

The House in Drammen

The House 位于挪威 Drammen，一栋建于 1868 年的老房子。过去的时间里，Kine 与 Kristoffer 以极其细腻、也极其耐心的方式修复了它：他们主导空间结构的调整，重新思考光线的走向，选择能与时间相处的材质，并在每一个细节中保持对“生活方式”的关注。是故事的源头，也是故事不断延展的地方。

The House is located in Drammen, Norway, inside a residence built in 1868. Over the years, Kine and Kristoffer have restored it with exceptional care and patience: reworking the spatial structure, reconsidering the path of light, choosing materials that age well, and attending to every detail with an eye toward how a home is truly lived in. It is the origin of their story — and a place where that story continues to unfold.

Ask og Eng’s origins lie in their home in Norway. Years ago, they began building a bamboo kitchen for their apartment — a process that not only changed the way they lived but also defined the material direction that would become central to their practice. In The House, this material language is fully expressed: the kitchen forms a clear and grounded structure; the living room furniture carries soft, steady lines; and the bedroom’s storage systems remain quiet, restrained, and unobtrusive. Bamboo reveals different expressions from room to room, each aligning with its own rhythm of daily life.

They said：”We care more about whether something can exist for ten years, or even longer.” For this reason, The House becomes less a showroom and more a demonstration of their way of living and creating: a slow rhythm, honest materials, durable structures, and furniture meant to be used for many years. The philosophy of Ask og Eng is not spoken — it is seen in the quiet patterns of everyday life.

There are no signs of over-design here, nor any intention to create a space that looks photographic. Everything begins with observing how life unfolds: Where does the light enter? Where will the children sit? Which material will the hand touch first? They are not pursuing “beauty” in a superficial sense, but rather longevity and a quiet sense of rightness.

In The House, Ask og Eng fully practice their understanding of home — a living organism that can be adjusted, used, and shaped over time. Across the kitchen, hallway, courtyard, bedroom, and living room, bamboo and light together create the rhythm of the space, while the way the family uses these objects continually informs the next step in their design.

These spaces do not attempt to “define” Ask og Eng; instead, they reveal the essence of the practice in a gentle, unforced way — the honesty of materials, the patience of handcraft, a rhythm that feels internally coherent, and a quiet commitment to making things that endure, even in a world that moves ever faster.
