There has been a record number of expatriations, people renouncing their citizenship or are long-term residents giving back their green cards, in the US this year, foreign media reported. According to data from US Treasury Department, there have been 2,369 expatriations so far this year, which is at least 33% more than the previous high in 2011.

Experts said the overall increase was likely due to the tougher enforcement of US tax laws.
