Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group is to join the soccer industry, having agreed to buy 50% of shares in soccer club Guangzhou Evergrande, xinhuanet.com reported. At a joint press conference Thursday, Alibaba founder and chairman Jack Ma and Xu Jiayin, chairman of the Evergrande group, announced this much anticipated agreement. Alibaba will pay up to RMB1.2b to acquire the shares, club sources said.
