SOHO China's chairman Pan Shiyi and his wife Zhang Xin recently signed an agreement with Harvard University to donate $15m to the school as part of a project to finance underprivileged Chinese students to study at top universities around the world, chinadaily.com.cn reported. But this philanthropic move has generated controversy among Chinese Internet users. Many question Pan's decision to donate the funds to a university in a country much wealthier than China - when many of the schools in rural areas of his own country lack basic facilities. Some says those who go overseas for their studies cannot be called "underprivileged students".
