A business internship programme hosted by Dubai is enabling some of China's most exceptional young graduates to fast track their careers.

Seventeen Chinese graduates are in the early stages of a new internship programme hosted by Dubai, which focuses on the fast-track development of future international business leaders.
长达10个月的迪拜商业实习项目(Dubai Business Internship，简称DBI)是阿联酋副总统兼总理、迪拜酋长穆罕默德•本•拉希德•阿勒马克图姆殿下的智慧结晶，目的是让这群才华横溢的中国学生对迪拜的多元文化和及广泛地区能有更深入的了解，在沉浸学术研究的同时，也能掌握商业成功的必需软技能。
The 10-month Dubai Business Internship (DBI) programme is the brainchild of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. It sets out to promote deeper understanding of the multicultural emirate and the wider region to this gifted group of Chinese students, immersing them not just in academic study but also in the soft skills vital for business success.

But what really sets this programme apart is that each student will have the opportunity to gain work experience with one of the global hub's leading businesses. The world-class operations they will engage with include Emirates Group, Jumeirah Group – the company behind the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel – global ports giant DP World, and Emaar, developer of the Burj Khalifa, spurred on by personal support from the leadership of the emirate, who turned out in force to welcome the new interns, and to offer both encouragement and advice.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, together with the Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan, and the Deputy Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum, joined the Consul General of the People's Republic of China, His Excellency Tang Weibin, and other senior Dubai officials, ministers and executives of the placement partners to meet every one of the students on their first day. Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State, also delivered a keynote address.
"来到这里我感到非常幸运，简直不可思议，"来自广州实习生——北京大学法学硕士邓迪心表示，她对即将在迪拜国际金融中心法庭进行的26周实习安排兴奋不已。"迪拜酋长穆罕默德殿下告诉我们要释放自己的潜质，放手去做。要志存高远，运用在实习期间获取的经验和技能为世界创造积极的影响。"邓补充道。
"I feel extremely lucky to be here. It's magic," intern Dixin Deng comments. Born in Guangzhou, Deng is a Masters in Law student at Peking University. Her 26-week placement with Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts will be a high point. "Sheikh Mohammed told us to unlock our potential, and to reach out," says Deng, to "dream big" and "to use the experience and skills gained during the programme to make a positive impact in the world".

The DBI seems to be unlocking that potential already for Deng and her fellow trainees thanks to expert theoretical training modules delivered by the Germany-based European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in partnership with learning and development firms Capadev and Bon Education, a series of unique internships, and the personal touch of the inspirational sheikh.

The academic element of the programme has been crafted by ESMT's Professor Joe Peppard, who has worked in consultation with James Maughan, the director of DBI for Falcon and Associates, acting on behalf Sheikh Mohammed.

The standard of the interns is a bonus for Professor Peppard. "The students on the DBI are as good, if not better, than we would typically see on a (European) Masters programme. It's what we would have hoped for, and shows that China is producing some great students.
"如果今后的实习生也能保持如此高水准，那么这个项目会非常棒。"
"If future cohorts are as good, the programme is going to be really superb."
本期实习生拥有不同的文化和学术背景，有的曾远赴英国、德国、挪威和美国求学，有的在香港和大陆完成学业，他们在10月初齐聚迪拜，经历项目的首个模块。课程包括组织行为学、市场营销、战略学、经济学、运营及项目管理、决策等等，分量十足。
The interns – drawn from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines, and universities as far afield as the UK, Germany, Norway and the US, as well as Hong Kong and mainland China – were brought together for the first module in early October. Organisational behaviour, marketing, strategy, economics, operations and project management, and decision-making, all featured heavily.

Learning career-boosting leadership skills for the future is a focal point of the DBI. After an initial period in their placement companies, and a second academic module where the students will learn about innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, and how to run a consulting project, they will put the theory into practice in their companies, working on a consulting assignment that will address an actual opportunity.

The placement companies have been carefully selected to match the interns' interests and aspirations, but it works both ways. Alan Simpson, Vice President – Talent, Learning and Leadership Development at Jumeirah Group, says: "Developing talent from all over the world is key for Jumeirah and keeps the brand current. China is a major market for us and over the coming years offers significant growth opportunities. Chinese interns will be a huge advantage for Jumeirah - they will help us learn about their culture and in turn we will develop them into ambassadors for the Jumeirah brand."

Robin Windley, the Senior Vice President of Human Capital at DP World, which has 65 marine terminals across six continents, agrees, describing the initiative as "a win-win situation for everyone". He says that there will naturally be an exchange of ideas with the interns "which broadens awareness of DP World as a global organisation, and builds networks for the interns to take forward with them in their careers". He also believes it will strengthen UAE/China development opportunities and relationships.
迪拜商业实习项目的标识是一座桥，反映了理论和实践之间的联结，同时也表达了实习项目将增强中迪合作的希冀。事实上这个目标已经实现——即加强两者之间业已存在的纽带、理解与尊重。当然，要证明该项目具备更深远的影响, 让我们拭目以待，这批实习生成为国际商业领袖的那一天。
The DBI logo, a bridge, reflects the link between theory and practice. It also expresses the hope that the programme will help nurture the relationship between China and Dubai. It has achieved that aim already, reinforcing the ties, understanding and respect that already exists between the two. And, of course, it could prove even more powerful still when this year's cohort become the international business leaders of tomorrow.
