Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner are pushing the search for extraterrestrial life into higher gear. The pair said Monday the $100m program funded by Milner will combine unprecedented computing capacity with the world's most powerful telescopes in a search of the heavens. Milner said the search will be entirely transparent and will rely on open-source software so findings can be shared throughout the world.
著名物理学家史蒂芬·霍金和俄罗斯亿万富豪尤里·米尔纳的联合将外星人搜索推向了一个全新的高度。两人20日透露，将由米尔纳出资1亿美元，以前所未有的方式充分利用计算机技术和世界上最强大的望远镜，开启太空搜寻。米尔纳表示，搜寻将全程透明，且使用开源软件，保证最终的发现成果由全世界共享。(美联社)
外星人用英文表示可以是alien，这个词也有外国人、陌生的等含义。此外上文中的extraterrestrial life可以表示外星生命，这是个天文学名词。ET也可以表示外星人，是extraterrestrial的缩写。智慧外星人即extraterrestrial intelligence。此次寻找外星人计划的英文为search for extraterrestrial intelligence，简称SETI。
"In an infinite universe, there must be other occurrences of life," Hawking said at the launch event at the Royal Society Science Academy in London.
在此次伦敦皇家科学学会寻找外星生命迹象的启动仪式上，霍金就说：“在无限的茫茫宇宙中，一定存在着其它形式的生命。”
"Somewhere in the cosmos, perhaps, intelligent life may be watching. Either way, there is no bigger question. It's time to commit to finding the answer, to search for life beyond Earth. It is important for us to know if we are alone in the dark," said Hawking.
霍金说：“或许外星生命会正盯着我们看呢。不管怎样，这都是最重要的问题。是时候有人来找出这个问题的答案了，去寻找地球以外的生命。弄清楚我们到底是不是黑暗中孤独的存在，这点对我们很重要。”
