又到了换季的时候啦，小伙伴们是不是又开始冲进商场买买买了呢？
说起表示衣服、服装的词，还真是不少，clothes、clothing、apparel、garb、attire……是不是傻傻分不清啊。
今天，我们要用一种聪明的办法，来辨别各种“衣服”之间的细微差别。
这个方法就是，使用专门的英语搜索引擎，也就是语料库（corpus），这是区别同义词最好的方法。
我们使用的搜索引擎是Subtlexus，这是一个基于口语的包含13.5万条英文句子的在线语料库。
首先，我们利用这个搜索引擎了解一下，各个词在口语里的使用频率。每个词搜索结果如下：
通过数据，可以看出“clothes”是一个非常常用的词。而其他几个词的使用频率就低得多。
接下来，再看看各词经常伴随出现的短语，我们使用美国当代英语语料库（Corpus of Contemporary American English）进行搜索，其给出了以下短语：
wear clothes 穿衣服
buy clothes 买衣服
clothes and shoes 衣服和鞋子
dressed in clothes 穿着衣服
clothes and hair 服装和美发
food and clothing 衣食
clothing store 服装店
wear clothing 穿着衣服
a clothing line 成衣线
shelter and clothing 住所和衣服
the apparel industry 服装行业
women's apparel 女装
an apparel company 服装公司
textiles and apparel 纺织品服装
apparel sales 服装销售
traditional garb 传统服装
prison garb 囚衣
religious garb 宗教装束
black garb 一袭黑衣
western garb 西方服饰
dressed in (some kind of) attire 穿着某种服装
casual attire 便服
formal attire 礼服
business attire 职业装
proper attire 得体的衣着
通过观察这些常见的词语搭配，是不是大致可以归纳出这几个词之间的差别了呢：
➤当你在讨论人们穿着的衣服的时候（clothes that people wear），“clothes”是最普通最常用的单词（the common word）。
➤“Clothing”在人们将衣服当做温饱必需品（clothes as something that people need）的时候使用较多。
➤当你在谈论服装销售行业（the business of selling clothing）的时候，"apparel"则使用得较多。
➤“Garb”是某一特定群体的人所穿的不太常见的衣服（unusual clothing that's worn by a particular group of people）。
➤"Attire"则通常用来谈论某人衣着的正式程度（the level of someone's dress）。
