Hans d’Orville provided an in-depth analysis of key topics from the COP29 Climate Summit in Baku Azerbaijan, including extreme weather events, the establishment of a new collective quantified goal on climate finance (NCQG), and greenhouse gas emissions. He highlighted that in 2024, the global average surface temperature has exceeded the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement at COP21, marking the first time this critical limit has been reached since the Industrial Revolution.
What is COP?
什么是COP?
The United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP) is the annual meeting of countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992. The convention calls for collective action to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations at levels that prevent dangerous anthropogenic (human-induced) interference with the climate system. COP29, held this year in Baku, Azerbaijan, marks the 29th conference of the parties.
Five Key Topics of COP29:

1. Establishing the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance.
2. Updates to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
3. Loss and Damage Fund.

Mehri Madarshahi introduced the Earth·Home concert, organized by the Melody for Dialogue among Civilizations Association in September at UNESCO headquarters.
She also presented a video shown during the concert, which was created using artificial intelligence (AI). The video depicted the impacts of global warming, forest fires, melting glaciers, excessive plastic use, smog, and overfishing — highlighting both natural disasters and the consequences of human activity.
This visual experience provided the audience with a more immediate understanding of the urgency of environmental crises, fostering greater environmental awareness and encouraging reflection on the future.
Mehri Madarshahi
During the closing Q&A session, audience members eagerly posed questions on topics such as climate change and the potential for humans to settle on Mars. Hans d’Orville and Mehri Madarshahi engaged in a lively dialogue with participants, exploring pathways to sustainable development.
In her remarks, Mehri Madarshahi emphasized, “The planet we call home is irreplaceable. We are all its guardians. We must nurture it, protect it, and fight for its survival.”
Mehri Madarshahi

The lecture was hosted by Frank Chen, the executive director of Bay Area International Exchange Service Center, and creator of Bay Area TEA Talk.
The event received strong support from the Uni-center, ensuring its success.
