Philandering top doctor breaks ‘loyalty’ promise to wife after first affair by hooking up with underling for sex, is accused of malpractice.
An elite surgeon from a top hospital in Beijing has been fired and expelled from the Communist Party after his wife revealed that he had affairs with several mistresses, in some cases leading to pregnancy and abortions.
Since mid-April, a tip-off letter about Xiao Fei, a senior doctor at the chest surgery department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, a major public-funded institution in Beijing, has gone viral on mainland social media.
The letter written by his wife, surnamed Gu, who is also a doctor from another top hospital, disclosed misdeeds in Xiao’s personal and professional life.
This prompted Xiao’s employer to issue a statement on April 27, saying that based on its investigation, the accusations against Xiao in Gu’s letter were true.
China-Japan Friendship Hospital said it has decided to sack Xiao and kick him out of the Communist Party.
Xiao, 39, and Gu have a daughter, and according to Gu, Xiao started cheating on her in 2019 with a nurse, surnamed Shi, in his own department.
They travelled together and Xiao even took Shi to meet his parents in his hometown in northwestern Shaanxi province.
Shi, who is already married, got pregnant with Xiao twice. Shi miscarried the first time and terminated the second pregnancy.
After Gu discovered Xiao’s infidelity, he knelt down before his wife and wrote a letter promising to be loyal.
But in June last year, Xiao met a junior doctor, surnamed Dong, and became engaged in a sexual relationship with her.
Dong fell pregnant in September last year and Xiao moved to live with her two months later. Xiao was filmed accompanying Dong to prenatal examinations many times.
In July last year when Dong was supposed to be transferred to another department for training, Xiao intervened and quarrelled with another doctor, named Ma Haoning who is responsible for training young doctors.
Xiao asked that Dong be allowed to continue to work in his department but his request was refused.
However, Dong was able to remain in Xiao’s department thanks to her professional connections.
Also in July, when Xiao took Dong to help during a surgery procedure, Dong’s work was criticised by a senior nurse.
Xiao confronted the nurse to defend Dong before he and his lover left the operating theatre leaving an anaesthetised patient lying on the bed for 40 minutes until he returned to carry out the surgery.
Gu claimed Xiao had affairs with at least two other women, both of whom worked at his hospital.
Xiao told the media outlet The Economic Observer on April 27 that he had problems in his personal life, but insisted that his medical ethics were “flawless”.
Regarding the incident involving his absence from the operating theatre, Xiao said after wrangling with the nurse, he felt dizzy and his hands were shaking so badly he could not perform the surgery.
Believing the patient was safe with an anaesthetist and other nurses standing by, Xiao left the theatre.
He said he took blood-pressure pills and had a rest in his office before returning to the operating theatre. The surgery went smoothly, said Xiao.
“The disciplinary committee at my hospital issued such a serious punishment on me in such a short time. I object to this decision,” Xiao was quoted as saying.
“I did something wrong. But I do not think I have compromised medical safety,” he added.
Xiao graduated from the prestigious Peking University Health Science Centre. He was a visiting scholar to America’s Mayo Clinic and Washington University in St. Louis during 2017-2018.
Meanwhile, Xiao’s colleague Ma was lauded on social media for upholding justice.
Ma is also the keyboard player in a famous indie rock group called Penicillin. His social media account has attracted 50,000 followers amid the fallout from the Xiao scandal.
