A mobile phone number ending with 8 sevens was auctioned on the morning of July 14th and sold for 3.2 million yuan, breaking the record of the previous phone number ending with 8 sevens, which was sold for 2.852 million yuan.
According to the auction announcement, the number, 1**77777777, is a China Mobile phone number registered in Nanning, Guangxi. It was seized by the People's Court of Binhai New District in Tianjin, and has a balance of 30.6 yuan in it.
The number is categorized as a high-end auspicious number, grade 12. To acquire the number of that grade, a user needs to deposit 15,000 yuan, with a monthly lease of 1,500 yuan per month.
Eleven individuals participated in the auction, and after 46 rounds of bidding, a user named Zhenjie won the highest bid at 3.2 million yuan.
It will be transferred to Zhenjie's name as soon as he pays the final amount within the specified period.
A judge at the court said phone numbers are intangible assets, and auspicious numbers are usually auctioned after they are seized from individuals to pay back loans and settle other financial losses involved in cases.
Those who buy the numbers are usually driven by the investment value of the number, marketing needs, or personal preference.
However, the judge reminded individuals who buy such numbers that the number is usually published to the public during auctions, which can sometimes result in malicious calls, text messages, etc., thus they should be cautious on how they use the number.
He also advised the public to refrain from harassing the new owners of such numbers, as the court would investigate such actions and pursue relevant legal responsibilities towards individuals who harass the new owners per the law.
