A 23-year-old man in Hong Kong SAR was arrested on Friday night in connection with an elaborate scam where he left his date at the restaurant after consuming a 73,160 yuan dinner with her without paying.
The suspect posed as a lawyer on a dating website and invited a girl he met on the platform to a dinner date. The two went to a high-end restaurant where they enjoyed an exorbitantly expensive dinner.
During the dinner, the pair ordered a lavish meal that included a bottle of Krug Clos d'Ambonnay champagne priced at over 64,015 yuan.
The victim told reporters that she had known the suspect a year ago on a dating website, and they had been chatting on social media via Telegram.
The suspect, who had told the victim that his surname is Chan –but the police found that his surname is Wong– told the victim that he was a successful lawyer and had decided to take things to the next level before the Qixi festival, also known as Double 7 festival, which is often regarded as the Chinese Valentine's Day.
Wong and the victim met at a restaurant on Thursday and enjoyed food and drinks, including an expensive bottle of Krug Clos d'Ambonnay 2002, which is regarded as the Rolls-Royce of champagnes.
However, when the two finished the dinner, Wong excused himself to use the restroom and disappeared into thin air.
According to public information, the champagne alone costs about 16,700 yuan.
The victim ended up paying for the dinner and reported the case to the police, but later told them that she was not interested in pursuing any charges against Wong.
However, on Friday, August 29, she returned to the police station and filed a report on the case and said she wanted to press charges against him.
Subsequently, Wong was apprehended by the police in Tseung Kwan O on charges of obtaining property by deception.
Police confirmed that officers seized clothing from the suspect, believed to have been worn during the alleged incident.
Wong remains in custody for further questioning as the investigation by the Central District crime unit continues.
