这次“超级日全食”横跨美国14个州，首先在西岸的俄勒冈登场。美国人民听闻后，纷纷激动地拖家带口去看日食！

For a few minutes, everyone in North America is being united in a solitary, awe-inspiring event: A total eclipse [ɪ'klɪps] of the sun. Americans of all ages join by the millions to watch the sky grow dark in midday and then slowly brighten again.
在几分钟内，北美洲的每个人都聚集在一起，观看这次绝无仅有的盛事：日全食。全美上下都加入到这数百万人的队伍中，一同观看天空在正午时分变暗, 然后再慢慢地回复光明。

The United States basked in the glory of a total eclipse on Monday, as the moon’s shadow swept from the rocky beaches of Oregon to the marshes of South Carolina.

This was totality, an event that had not happened in the continental United States since 1979 and had not traversed such a broad swath of the country in nearly a century.

话说上次在美国境内观测到日全食还是1979年呢，如今都快40年了，怪不得这次美国人民这么兴奋呢。

那么，这次把老美们激动坏了的日全食（total solar eclipse）到底是什么呢？
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the sun and earth, and when the moon fully or partially blocks the sun.
当月亮经过太阳和地球之间，并且完全或部分遮挡住太阳时，就会发生日食。
还记得民间“天狗食日”的传说吗？指的正是日食现象：
A total eclipse occurs when the moon completely obscures the intensely bright light of the sun, allowing the much fainter solar corona to be visible. During any one eclipse, totality occurs only in a narrow place on the surface of earth.
日全食发生时，月球完全遮住了强烈而明亮的太阳光线，只能看到较为暗淡的日冕部分。在任何一次日食中，太阳被全部遮挡的情况仅在地球表面较狭窄的范围内能看到。
日全食只是日食的一种，根据月球遮挡住太阳光线的程度，日食又分为：
Annular Eclipse
日环蚀
An annular eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are exactly in line with the earth. The key difference is that the Moon is further away from the earth during an annular as compared to a total eclipse. This makes the moon no longer completely covers the sun. Instead, a ‘ring of fire’ remains.
当太阳、月球与地球运行至一条直线上时，就会发生日环食。与日全食最大的不同是，发生日环食时，月球与地球的距离要更远，这就使得它不能完全遮挡住太阳。这时，太阳边缘就会留下一圈“火环”。
Partial Eclipse
日偏食
A partial eclipse occurs when the sun and moon are not exactly in line with the earth and the moon only partially obscures the sun. This phenomenon can usually be seen from a large part of the earth outside of the track of an annular or total eclipse.
当太阳、月球与地球不在同一条直线上时，月球只遮挡住太阳的一部分，就会发生日环食。这种情况在地球上能看到日全食或者日偏食以外的大部分地区都能观测到。
今天NASA摄影师的一张日偏食照片，拍到了太阳黑子和国际空间站。
当然，还有一种混合型的“全环食”（hybrid eclipse ），顾名思义，就是指在日食带内，当日食开始和终了的时候是环食，但中间有一段时间可以看到全食。
总的来说，日全食发生的概率比日偏食、日环食都要小，所以为了这次百年一遇的日全食，美国人民可都是牟足了劲儿：
我打电话去九个商店，就为买个日食眼镜，结果全卖完了。
没买上眼镜的人表示好方：
我没买到眼镜，现在好怕怕日全食哦，万一我不小心瞄上一眼，那就呵呵了......
