A 14-year-old boy in Shenzhen has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing his classmate, the city’s Intermediate People’s Court announced on Friday (Nov. 28th) . The defendant, surnamed Zhong, was convicted of intentional homicide for attacking a 14-year-old girl, Pan, at the entrance of her residential building on April 8.
The court stated that Zhong had developed irrational suspicions about Pan, purchased a folding knife in advance, and waited for the right moment to strike. Despite emergency treatment, the girl died from multiple stab wounds. Judges described the attack as premeditated and “particularly cruel.” Although Zhong was a minor eligible for leniency, the severity and social impact of the crime warranted a life sentence and permanent deprivation of political rights.
Investigators uncovered extensive preparation behind the killing. Zhong had attempted to purchase a colorless, tasteless poison online but failed when asked for identification. He also researched the legal consequences of homicide committed by minors, deleted his search records (later recovered by police), and scouted the crime scene a day before the attack.
The families lived in the same residential compound in Longhua District. The victim’s mother, surnamed Zeng, told The Paper that she and another parent had occasionally helped pick up Zhong at the request of his family. Although the households rarely interacted, she described Zhong as quiet and polite.
After the stabbing, Zhong reportedly told his family he injured his hands while intervening in a fight, prompting them to take him to a hospital. He was detained by police the following day.
Regarding motive, Zhong told the court he felt inferior to Pan because she performed better academically and believed she looked down on him — claims that the victim’s family strongly rejected.
