据美国消费者新闻与商业频道（CNBC）报道，世卫组织卫生紧急项目负责人迈克尔·瑞安博士在回应特朗普称新冠病毒为“中国病毒”时表示：病毒没有国界，不区分种族、肤色和财富。所以在语言使用上要小心，避免把病毒同个人联系起来。
“Viruses know no borders and they don’t care about your ethnicity, the color of your skin or how much money you have in the bank. So it’s really important we be careful in the language we use lest it lead to the profiling of individuals associated with the virus,” Dr. Mike Ryan, the executive director of WHO’s emergencies program, said at a news conference Wednesday when asked about Trump’s comments inciting violence against Asians.
Ryan repeated WHO's calls for solidarity, saying that characterizing a virus in such a manner could result in xenophobic behavior and “I’m sure anyone would regret profiling a virus along those lines.”
瑞安反复强调，世卫组织呼吁团结一致，以这样的方式称呼一种病毒会引发排外行为。“我相信任何把病毒与种族联系起来的人，终将会后悔的。”
“The pandemic influenza of 2009 originated in North America. We didn’t call it the North American flu,” Ryan observed.
“This is a time for solidarity, this is a time for facts, this is a time to move forward together, to fight this virus together. There is no blame in this,” he said.
“All we need now is to identify the things we need to do to move forward quickly, with speed and to avoid any indication of ethnic or other associations with this virus.”

WHO officials intentionally gave the virus a generic name to avoid stigmatizing a country or particular group, choosing a name that doesn’t refer to a geographical location, animals, an individual or a group of people.

2月11日，世界卫生组织在日内瓦召开发布会，世卫组织总干事谭德塞（Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus ）宣布新型冠状病毒所导致的疾病正式命名为COVID-19。
谭德赛当时就表示，“命名有利于避免使用其他不准确或污名化的名字。”
“Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said when the new name was announced Feb. 11.
