麻省理工学院教授被捕 被控资金欺骗

Gang Chen, an MIT professor and nanotechnology expert, was charged with failing to disclose to the US Department of Energy millions of dollars in funding he allegedly received from China. He was arrested and released on bail this month. 麻省理工教授，纳米科技专家陈刚因未能向美国能源部披露其从中国获得的资助而被起诉。陈刚在本月被捕后获得了保释。

据《纽约时报》报道，1月14日波士顿联邦检察官宣布起诉陈刚。美检方称，陈刚自2013年以来已获得1900万美元的美国经费，同时还获得了2900万美元的外国经费，其中1900万美元来自一所受中国政府资助的大学。
Prosecutors said Dr. Chen, who is known for his work on nanoscale heat-conduction physics, had received $19 million in US grants since 2013, while simultaneously receiving $29 million in foreign funding, including $19 million from a research university funded by the Chinese government.

此外，美检方称陈刚并未被指控向中国传递敏感信息。
Mr. Lelling acknowledged that Dr. Chen was not accused of passing any sensitive information to China.
▌中美学界怒批，麻省理工校长和教职工声援
该事件当时引发中美学界高度关注，中国著名生物学家、北京大学校务委员会副主任饶毅称美国检方对陈刚的指控极其荒谬，这一逮捕是“种族主义行为”。
1月26日，《纽约时报》在报道中称，陈刚被捕后的10天里，他的同事们公开抗议，认为美国检方的行为已超出应有范畴，MIT校长及160多名教职员工签署公开信，声援陈刚。
▌《纽约时报》：科学家被逮捕，学术界反击
1月22日，MIT校长拉斐尔·里夫（Rafael Reif）发表公开信，称刑事诉讼中引用的“来自中国的1900万美元”经费并非陈刚个人所得，而是MIT和中国南方科技大学进行的一项广为人知的合作的一部分，陈刚是该项目的首任院长，但这并不是他个人与中方的合作。
The university itself has challenged one of the prosecution’s assertions, saying that $19 million in Chinese funding cited in the criminal complaint was not granted to Dr. Chen individually, but rather was part of a well-publicized collaboration that Dr. Chen helped to broker between M.I.T. and a Chinese research center.
“While Professor Chen is its inaugural M.I.T. faculty director, this is not an individual collaboration; it is a departmental one, supported by the institute,” the statement said.
在得知陈刚被捕后，MIT的教职工们对陈刚表示了支持，并谴责了美国对中国科学家所采取的行动。
The faculties said they are concerned about the allegations against their colleague and the implications for open academia and intellectual.
教职工们表示，他们关注对陈刚的指控以及这项指控对开放的学术和知识自由的影响。
His colleagues said in the letter that the charge against him is "deeply flawed and misleading".
陈刚的同事们在信中还表示针对他的指控存在“严重缺陷和误导性”。
在联名信中，MIT百名教授写道：
In many respects, the complaint against Gang Chen is a complaint against all of us, and an affront to any citizen who values science and the scientific enterprise.

据悉，2018年美国前总统特朗普启动了“中国倡议（China Initiative）”行动。迄今为止，该行动已对十多名美国学者提出指控。
