Three Squirrels, one of China's leading online snacks retailer, is drawing fire at home for using a female model with slanted eyes in an ad posted over two years ago, which is seen by some as being racist, and pandering to old stereotypes about Chinese in the West.

Three Squirrels responded to the online controversy on Sunday by saying the make-up was chosen based on model’s facial features. But the company also apologised in a statement that read:
“Regarding the opinion that the model does not fit the mainstream’s aesthetic taste and makes the public feel uncomfortable, we are sincerely sorry.”
The company added that it had removed the web page containing the advertisements.

The model Cai Niang Niang defended herself on Sunday against the controversy saying the abuse had transformed into “online violence”.
“With small eyes, am I not Chinese?” she wrote on Weibo on Sunday. “I totally agree with patriotism. However, creating big problems out of normal matters has become a morbid obsession. I hope everybody can have a healthy mindset.”

It is absurd to say that someone born with small eyes should not model for a product. However, the target of the public’s ire was not the model, but the brand.
As a domestic brand, Three Squirrels should have known about the sensitivity of Chinese consumers to how they are portrayed in advertisements. Yet in their advertisement, the brand portrayed the model in a way that people seeing her would inevitably notice her eyes.
For too long, it was the Western style of appreciation of beauty that dominated the international aesthetics. Many Western brands stereotype Asian females as having slanting eyes in their posters and publications.
But gone are those days when Westerners had an absolute say over everything. The Chinese people do not need to follow their standards on what constitutes beauty and what kind of females can be considered beautiful.
