Police in southwest China are investigating a food vlogger who has come under fire for cooking and eating a shark believed to be an endangered species in her latest video.
The fish eaten by Tizi, a female influencer from Nanchong, Sichuan province, in the video, was confirmed to be a great white shark, a species under national second-class wild animal protection, local police said Sunday, according to media reports.
Tizi procured the shark from coastal area in Fujian province through an online platform, according to the police investigation, said an official from agriculture and rural affairs bureau of Nanchong. People involved are in police custody, added the official.
The video uploaded online shows the influencer unpacking a large shark in front of a seafood supermarket, attracting a crowd of onlookers. She and others then take the shark to the countryside, where it is cut up and cooked.

At one corner of the video frame was a notification saying the animal was “bred in captivity and is edible”. However, people online have questioned the integrity of that warning label.

The owner of the seafood supermarket said the shark was actually brought by the vlogger for filming, rather than being bought from the market, according to media reports. Earlier, Tizi denied she was eating an endangered species when responding to Sichuan local news app Red Star News on Thursday.
