A video showing four tourists standing barefoot in the waters of Jiuzhaigou, a top scenic spot in Southwest China's Sichuan province, has been widely circulating online and triggering debate, mainly criticism, from netizens.
The tourists were subject to administrative penalties in accordance with the law and apologized openly in the form of a letter as requested.
The water of the attraction amid mountain valleys has a high concentration of calcium carbonate crystals, giving it intense colors. It is so clear that the bottom is often visible even at high depths. As the water is extremely sensitive, any presence of man-made objects in it will cause the pristine environment irreversible damage, such as excessive nutrients feeding the growth of aquatic plants like algae.
