From manned spaceflight to deep-sea exploration, from basic research to the commercialization of scientific achievements, China's science and technology sector has witnessed historic, holistic and profound changes during the past decade.
In the last 10 years, China has become an innovative nation. Its research and development budget grew from 1.03 trillion yuan ($152 billion) in 2012 to 2.79 trillion yuan in 2021, becoming the second-largest R&D spender in the world. China also climbed the Global Innovation Index from 34th place in 2012 to 12th place in 2021, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization.
Last year, the country's spending on basic research was 3.4 times larger than ten years ago, while the nation's scientists produced 42,920 highly cited papers, about 5.4 times more than 2012.
With regard to the popularization of science, the proportion of the population that was scientifically literate population grew from 3.27 percent in 2010 to 10.56 percent in 2020.
