Officials from local cultural and tourism bureaus are increasingly donning traditional Chinese attire, playing the part of heroes and other popular characters from Chinese martial arts fiction to draw netizens who take the lead from internet influencers in picking holiday destinations and following the latest trends.

在10月27日发布的《解局长带你游随州-第19集》短视频里，解伟身着白衣，头戴发冠，在银杏落叶中舞剑饮酒，氛围唯美。然而，评论却不怎么“给面子”，纷纷吐槽造型粗糙，亦有评论称解局长体形宽大，没有侠客飘飘欲仙、逍遥洒脱之风，不适合做此扮相，有人甚至直言“没有颜值不必强求”。
Xie Wei, director of the cultural and tourism bureau of Suizhou, Hubei province, made such a splash on the internet. In a short video, Xie draped himself in white and wore a guan, a traditional Chinese crown headdress, as he dabbled in swordplay and drank wine amid the golden hues of autumn, trying to mesmerize viewers with a beautiful cultural setting.
But Xie's style failed to strike a chord with many netizens; some said he lacked the charisma of a hero and criticized his strained, crude attempt.
Xie replied to more than 2,000 social media comments, admitting that he and his costume designer did not have sufficient time and the relevant experience to meet their standards. His sincerity drew support from some netizens.
Some people still felt that it was inappropriate for someone to try something that did not seem to fit. There are better forms of promotion, they said.
“We need ways to promote our hometown... I wouldn't care if I made fun of myself, as long as people get to know Suizhou because of my videos,” Xie Wei said.
Liu Hong, director of the cultural and tourism bureau of Ganzi Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province, commented on the video posted by Xie Wei last Saturday, praising Suizhou's beautiful scenery and inviting Xie to visit Ganzi in the future.
According to Xie, the place where he shot his video is also popular with filmmakers. Movie director Hou Xiaoxian used the site for several scenes of The Assassin.
